  • The EU is engaged in the transition towards sustainability, and the European Green Deal sets the direction for its action through twin green and digital transitions.   

  • To be successful, a systemic transformation requires coherence and coordination across all EU policies and all levels of governance (local, national, EU). It also requires coherence across all three dimensions of sustainability – environmental, economic and social. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate a long-term perspective into policymaking to ensure a successful transition towards sustainability.

  • The Competence Centre on Foresight has conducted multiple foresight projects on sustainability transitions, including support to the Commission’s annual Strategic Foresight Reports. It builds a scenario-based strategic foresight framework to explore how sustainability could look like for the EU in the long-term and to inform policymaking.
