Compendium of forgotten foods in Africa

The document discusses the significance of neglected and underutilized species (NUS) in enhancing food security, biodiversity, and nutrition. It highlights how NUS are traditionally cultivated but often overlooked due to modernization, limited research, and inadequate market support. The study emphasizes the role of NUS in dietary diversity, resilience to climate change, and their economic potential for smallholder farmers, especially in Africa.

This compendium is a collection of 100 forgotten food crops of Africa as prioritized by stakeholders from across the continent. It contains credible information and data on botanical classification, agroecological suitability, agronomic requirements, traditional and medicinal uses, value-added prospects and nutritional content.

Diversity of NUS: NUS includes a variety of crops such as traditional leafy greens, cereals, tubers, and fruits, which are well-adapted to local conditions. They contribute to biodiversity conservation and offer resilience to climate variability.

Nutritional benefits: NUS are rich in micronutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium.

Environmental, economic and social value: Some of the NUS show clear traits for sustainability. They also provide livelihood opportunities by creating value chains through a variety of uses, by improved processing and marketing.
