FAIRMODE - Forum for Air Quality Modeling

FAIRMODE brings together air quality modelers and users to promote and support the harmonized use of models by EU Member States to support the European Air Quality Directives.

Project at a glance

FAIRMODE brings together air quality modelers and users to promote and support the harmonized use of models by EU Member States under the European Air Quality Directives:

  • helping model users at national, regional urban and local levels in policy-related model applications
  • enhancing communication and promoting good modeling practice across Europe
  • yearly plenary meetings and more technical workshops, seminars and more

Working Groups

Source apportionment to support AQ management (Working Group 1)

Working Group 1 delivers guidance on the fitness for purpose of different source apportionment approaches in the overall context of air quality management practices.

Quality assurance, quality check and fitness for purpose of AQ assessment modelling applications (Working Group 2)

While this Working Group 2 activities have so far focused on developing a methodology to benchmark model performance (Modelling Quality Objective (MQO), QA/QC protocol)…

Quality control indicators for AQ forecasts (Work Group 3)

This working group aims at providing a specific benchmarking framework for modelled air quality forecasts. Performance indicators have been developed to provide additional information about…

Microscale assessment (Working Group 4)

Microscale air quality modelling refers to air quality modelling at high spatial resolution (typically down to a scale in the order of one meter), usually focused on urban…

Planning (Working Group 5)

The aim of this WG is to support the use of modelling approaches for air quality planning purposes.

Sensors and data-fusion (Working Group 6)

Low-cost sensors are relevant for FAIRMODE, especially concerning methodologies to combine sensor networks with modelled data and official measurements. WG6 activities will focus on discussing…

Compilation of high resolution emission inventories (Working Group 7)

The focus of this WG is on the compilation of high resolution emissions to be used as basis for air quality modelling applications at urban/local scales. One of the main aims is to provide recommendations…

Monitoring design, spatial representativeness and associated exceedance situation indicators (Working Group 8)

The AAQD offers the opportunity for MS to use model applications (alone or as supplementary information of measurements) to assess the air quality.
