Food Systems profile - Benin

The following priority actions for the transformation of food systems in Benin have been identified:

  1. Capacity building of food systems stakeholders and their organisation in the development of their businesses through training and access to information.

  2. Establishment of innovative public-private funding mechanisms.

  3. Promotion of sub-regional coordination for improved food trade and phytosanitary policies.

  4. Investment through a public-private partnership in food systems infrastructure (transport, storage and conservation, processing, market).

  5. Mainstreaming of climate change adaptation and climate risk mitigation into local and national policies.

  6. Allocation of sufficient resources to local governments to enable them to invest in basic socio-economic infrastructure.

  7. Ensure access for women and young people to technical and financial resources for an optimal integration into food systems.

  8. Development of infrastructure in secondary cities.

  9. Promotion of agroecology to producers, consumers, and other food systems actors. This involves implementing incentive policies to provide specific services and programmes (e.g. production and marketing of organic inputs, organic production and processing).

  10. Support research institutions in the production and dissemination of knowledge on agroecology adapted to local contexts. Build the capacity of agro-silvo-pastoral farmers through the development of training programs.

  11. Improving food security and nutrition governance through the systemic mainstreaming of nutrition in policies. This includes strengthening the capacities of stakeholders in nutrition.

  12. Promote agricultural diversification (agro-silvo-pastoralism), the production of local agricultural products with high nutritional value and adapted to the agroecological environment.

  13. Ensure diversification of income-generating activities and the creation of inclusive jobs, including the promotion of ecotourism (in particular in West Atacora).

  14. Allocate substantial budgetary resources to social protection for vulnerable and food insecure households. This social protection system should incorporate a productive safety net component to support small-scale producers in their activities and a purely social component aimed at more vulnerable households.
