FURQAN ASIF

Assistant Professor

I am an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist. Broadly, my academic and research experience revolves around human-environment relations with grounded experience in areas of: coastal fisheries, social resilience, social wellbeing, migration, climate change adaptation, and natural resource management. I have a PhD in International Development (University of Ottawa), a Master of Environmental Science (University of Toronto) and a Honours Bachelor of Science (major: Biology; minor: Environmental Science).

Presently, I am an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Blue Governance (CBG) at Aalborg University (Denmark). I am involved in research projects focusing on improving EU fisheries governance and increasing the uptake of ecosystem-based management in Europe to support a sustainable blue economy via integration of marine biodiversity conservation.

Before this, I was a postdoc at Wageningen University (Netherlands) within the Environmental Policy Group (ENP) focused on the implementation of the Aquaculture Governance Indicators (AGI) framework that aims to assess aquaculture systems in select countries around the world with the goal of better understanding and improving governance processes to catalyze the sustainability transformation of the sector. I continue to work on outputs from this project in my current role at CBG.

From 2018 - 2020, I was a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa, where I taught several courses both in the Dept of Geography and School of International Development and Global Studies. I also have international teaching experience, as a guest lecturer for a social science research methods course at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and a visiting professor at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul (South Korea).

My professional experience lies at the intersection of environment, policy and development. I have previously held positions at Canadian government, NGO and intergovernmental levels (United Nations University) covering research, environment-policy analysis/implementation, communications, and project coordination roles.
