The European Union is facing significant water challenges driven by climate change, unsustainable practices, ageing infrastructure, and mismanagement. In 2025 the European Commission launched the European Water Resilience Strategy featuring EUWA - the European Water Academy - as its flagship initiative.
EUWA is an innovative research and technology infrastructure designed to address the pressing challenges of water management in Europe. It represents also an innovative collaboration and public-private-partnership between the European Commission, key water stakeholders, academic institutions and other key sectors.
The primary objective of EUWA is to become the leading platform for water resilience and governance training providing tailored solutions in training, capacity building, networking and technology transfer to a diverse community of water professionals.
The EUWA is structured as a network of networks, unified by three core principles that guide all its activities:
Lab-to-Fab Principle: Develop scalable, market-ready solutions to address water issues
Living Labs Principle: Real-world sites for testing and training
Hands-on Training: courses held in local-language, customer discovery, and public engagement for broad acceptance
