On May 23rd we will launch the new section: ‘Cancer Inequality Factsheets’, as an online event during the European Public Health week , an initiative by the European Public Health Association (EUPHA).

Our first of the series is the factsheet: ‘Cancer in 2040: Estimates for an ageing Europe’. The factsheet presents the 2040 estimates for new cancer cases and cancer deaths in population 65+ years old. We show that the 65+ population group will observe the biggest increase in cancer incidence and mortality. Colorectal, prostate, lung and breast cancers will be responsible for largest cancer burden in 2040. The estimates only consider demographic changes and assume that cancer rates will remain similar to those observed in 2020, highlighting the vulnerability of this population group and other sex and regional inequalities. The 2040 estimates are calculated based on the European Cancer Information System (ECIS) 2020 cancer incidence and mortality estimated rates and the EUROSTAT projected populations up to 2040.

The ‘Inequality Factsheets’ are the 3rd deliverable of the European Cancer Inequalities Registry (ECIR).

ECIR was launched by the President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen at the event: Cancer in Women: Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan on the 2nd of February, 2022.

ECIR is one of the flagship initiatives of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and it is governed by Joint Research Centre (JRC), the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-WHO).

The ECIR website started from the development of the ECIR Data Tool, which allows to explore and compare indicators on inequalities in cancer. It covers the whole cancer continuum, from prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment to survival and quality of life, as well as indicators quantifying the burden of cancer. The Data Tool compiles quantitative (soon also qualitative) data from authoritative sources along six inequality dimensions: country, sex, age, education, income and urbanisation.

The tool is accompanied by a reporting mechanism, prepared by the OECD. In February 2023 we published Cancer Country Profiles that aim to help countries understand their strengths and weaknesses in cancer prevention and care. Next year we will release Analytical Reports comparing country’s performance at EU level.
