• The share of renewables in the power mix could rise from 25% today to 40% or even 66% in 2040.

• Renewable energy sources have grown at a global annual average rate of 2% in the period 1990-2015, slightly higher than the 1.8% annual growth rate of the TPES, mainly run by solar PV at 45.5%, wind at 24%, biogases at 12.8%, solar thermal at 11.4%, and liquid biofuel at 10.1%.
