Use of models in policymaking: Questions you should ask when presented with the use of simulation models in policymaking

The launch and discussion of the new guidance for policymakers and civil society on “Questions you should ask when presented with the use of simulation models in policymaking”, organised by the European Commission Competence Centre on Modelling and Decision Analysis (CC-MOD) and Sense about Science EU, will take place on

19 June 2023, from 10:00 to 11:30 CEST.

Invitation

We warmly invite you to join the European Commission Competence Centre on Modelling and Decision Support (CC-MOD) and Sense about Science EU to launch and discuss the new guidance for policymakers and civil society on “Questions you should ask when presented with the use of simulation models in policymaking”.

Models are used to support policy in a rapidly growing range of areas - energy planning, climate impacts, pandemic responses, banking... It has become urgent that the people who make, implement and experience policy are equipped to question that evidence and understand what is reliable and relevant. CC-MOD and Sense about Science have worked together to identify the key questions and socialise them with citizens and policy makers to produce this new guidance.

Please join us online at 10:00–11:30am CEST on 19 June via WebEx for a lively discussion, convened by Tracey Brown, director of Sense about Science and Paul Smits, Head of CC-MOD about meeting the challenges of simulation models, with a panel including:

  • Jolita Butkeviciene, Director of Innovation in Science and Policymaking at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission
  • Wolfgang Hiller, Director, Directorate for Impact Assessment and Foresight, Directorate-General European Parliamentary Research Service, European Parliament
  • Dorota Denning, Member of the Regulatory Scrutiny Board
  • Caroline van Bers, President of The Integrated Assessment Society
  • Bas Arts, Chief Scientist at PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency
  • Leen Hordijk, Special Adviser, Joint Research Centre, European Commission

The guidance has just been published here.

We hope you are able to join us - please feel free to send an email with questions or comments that you’re keen for us to cover on the day.

Thank you.

Paul Smits and Tracey Brown
