Monitoring the SDGs in the Centro region: challenges and opportunities
save the date Coimbra

The Pilot Project "REGIONS2030: Monitoring the SDGs in the EU regions - Filling the data gaps", supported by the European Parliament is developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in collaboration with ESTAT and DG REGIO. The REGIONS2030 Pilot Project carried out, inter alia, involving 10 European regions, which share a strong ambition to monitor the achievement of the SDGs and are willing to explore the synergies of SDGs monitoring, policy-making and sustainable regional development. The participating regions are working with experts to develop, test and improve a framework of indicators for monitoring the achievement of the SDGs at regional level. It is expected to define the method and identify the relevant indicators at NUTS2 level, which will be eventually used by all EU regions.

Centro Region has been working with a national expert and National Statistics to develop and improve a framework of indicators for monitoring the achievement of the SDGs at regional level. Despite being a European project, Centro intends to use additional customized indicators to reflect its specific territorial characteristics, namely the contrast between the coast and the interior of the region.

The overall aim of this capacity building session, co-organised by the JRC and the Centro Region, is to raise awareness of the audience about the importance of achieving the SDGs and increase their skills and knowledge on monitoring its progress.

The objectives of the capacity-building event are:

  • Present the project including milestones and expected outputs
  • Raise awareness of audience about the need to achieve the SDGs
  • Increase the skills and knowledge of attendees and support the networking
  • Discuss the main challenges and opportunities of the regional monitoring framework

The first two sessions will be on stressing the importance of the 2030 Agenda, followed by the presentation and discussion of the regional monitoring framework developed as part of the REGIONS2030 pilot project. This will allow identifying challenges, needs and additional support required by the different stakeholders as future users of this tool.

These sessions will be more interactive and designed to foster exchange of ideas on capacity development needs related to monitoring (data and statistics) and strengthening stakeholder engagement/networking.

In the afternoon, the capacity building session will seek to support the region in integrating good practices and recommendations coming from regional and local projects on SDG’s, with a sharpened focus on monitoring and enhancing implementation of the Agenda.
