The Global Knowledge Index (GKI)
Description:
The Global Knowledge Index (GKI) provides a comprehensive roadmap of the factors and attributes that drive knowledge competitiveness. The index focuses on six fundamental sectors as the building blocks of a knowledge society; pre-university education, technical and vocational education and training, higher education, research, development and innovation (RDI), information and communications technology (ICT), and economy, all nurtured in a suitable enabling environment. The GKI is updated annually and its statistical methodology and structure were revised in 2021 to incorporate the global development challenges and emerging trends in a knowledge society; after having remained unchanged since its introduction in 2017. The 2022 edition of the Global Knowledge Index is expected to be launched towards December 2022 introducing a new approach for data imputation.
Societal impact:
As knowledge has multidimensional facets that intersect with all aspects of life, it has become compulsory to revisit knowledge indices to ensure a holistic approach is put in place when assessing knowledge societies.
Unlike the vast majority of the global repository of knowledge on development primarily focusing on the economic returns of a knowledge economy, the Global Knowledge Index (GKI), an exemplary practice, represents an important addition providing diverse and reliable data that can help countries and decision makers to understand and respond to related transformations and challenges more clearly.
It assesses seven sub-indices, chosen both for their correlative interactive relationships and their centrality to the process of cognitive and developmental progress.
The GKI captures the multidimensional nature of knowledge and help direct policymakers and researchers in their efforts towards fostering knowledge-based societies that propel development and economic growth and bridging knowledge gaps.
