COIN Open Day - Advanced Technologies for Industry

The Advanced Technologies for Industry (ATI) project merges the indicators from two major EU initiatives, the KETs observatory and the Digital Transformation Monitor. In addition, the project implements the result of the project ‘Towards better monitoring innovation strengths, regional specialisation, and business trends in support of industrial modernisation in the EU’ namely its shortlisted indicators (30 in total). Besides the inherited indicators from previous initiatives the project also generates indicators via surveys and novel data sources (company websites, crunchbase and linkedIn). The indicators compose the data repository of ATI.

Description:

The Advanced Technologies for Industry (ATI) project merges the indicators from two major EU initiatives, the KETs observatory and the Digital Transformation Monitor. In addition, the project implements the result of the project ‘Towards better monitoring innovation strengths, regional specialisation, and business trends in support of industrial modernisation in the EU’ namely its shortlisted indicators (30 in total). Besides the inherited indicators from previous initiatives the project also generates indicators via surveys and novel data sources (company websites, crunchbase and linkedIn). The indicators compose the data repository of ATI.

Composites are calculated per building block of the ATI conceptual framework for all advanced technologies (AT). Composites are also build per Advanced Technology for the building blocks '1. New tech and tech based products' and '2. Technology uptake'. The indicators used for each composite represent a selection from the data repository of ATI. The objective is not to create an ATI index (the emphasis remains on the individual indicators). The composites have instead been added for communication purposes, reducing the number of indicators and as entry point to the complete indicator list.

Societal impact:

The rapid rise of advanced technologies is transforming businesses, industries and the society and it is profoundly changing the future competitiveness and employment dynamics of nations. Understanding the trends in the level of technology production and the uptake of various technologies and their impact across sectors and countries can help policymakers and businesses alike taking more appropriate decisions. Main policy questions to answer with the support of the ATI data repository are related to the maturity level and adoption rate of advanced technologies, the trends in key enabling factors such as skills, investment or entrepreneurship and comparison of the EU27 performance to key competing economies.
