The European Commission document on ‘European Research and Innovation for Food and Nutrition Security’ sets out how research and innovation policy is currently contributing to food and nutrition security in Europe and in a global context. It highlights the complexity and diversity of food systems and how they connect across multiple industrial sectors, scientific disciplines and actors, while operating at multiple geographical scales – from local to global. The document calls for more impactful research and innovation by adopting a food systems approach underpinned by sustainability, linking land and sea, and encompassing the entire ‘food value chain’ – from producers to consumers, and back.
