Pact for the Future

The Pact for the Future is a comprehensive agreement adopted by the Heads of State and Government, representing the peoples of the world, to protect the needs and interests of present and future generations. The Pact aims to ensure that the United Nations and other key multilateral institutions can deliver a better future for people and planet.

The Pact reaffirms the commitment to international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, and the three pillars of the United Nations: sustainable development, peace and security, and human rights. It recognizes the need for a recommitment to international cooperation based on respect for international law and the principles of trust, equity, solidarity, and universality.

The Pact sets out 56 actions in five areas.

The first area focuses on Sustainable development and financing for development.

Concerning Sustainable development and financing for development, the Pact reaffirms the commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. It emphasizes the need to accelerate progress towards achieving the Goals, including through concrete political steps and mobilizing significant additional financing from all sources for sustainable development.

The Pact sets out several actions to achieve sustainable development, including:

Action 1. Implementing the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development.

Action 2. Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty.

Action 3. Ending hunger and eliminating food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition.

Action 4. Closing the SDG financing gap in developing countries, including through the provision of sustainable, affordable, and accessible development finance.

Action 5. Ensuring that the multilateral trading system continues to be an engine for sustainable development.

Action 6. Investing in people to end poverty and strengthen trust and social cohesion.

Action 7. Strengthening efforts to build peaceful, just, and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

Action 8. Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

Action 9. Strengthening actions to address climate change, including through the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Action 10. Restoring, protecting, conserving, and sustainably using the environment.

The Pact also emphasizes the need to mobilize significant additional financing from all sources for sustainable development, including through the reform of the international financial architecture (Action 47). It calls for the strengthening of the response of the Security Council for the maintenance of international peace and security and its relationship with the General Assembly (Action 41).

Overall, the Sustainable Development and Financing for Development section of the Pact for the Future emphasizes the need for collective action and international cooperation to achieve sustainable development and address the financing gap in developing countries.
