Caterina Benincasa is curator and head of the SciArt project at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). With a background in physics, philosophy, history of science, contemporary art, and heritage studies, she has spent two decades fostering dialogue across art-science-heritage. At the JRC, she develops opportunities for collaboration and co-creation between artists, scientists, and policymakers.
I am a curator and researcher working across art, science and public institutions. I currently lead JRC SciArt at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, where I develop collaborations between artists, scientists and policy officers and explore how artistic research can contribute to new ways of producing knowledge and engaging with complex societal questions.
My background spans physics, philosophy, history of science, contemporary art and World Heritage Studies, reflecting a long-standing interest in the relationship between epistemology and aesthetics, scientific rationality and artistic practice. Over the past two decades, I have worked across research institutes, universities, cultural organisations and artists’ studios.
My current interests centre on artistic research in science-for-policy environments, the cultural and political dimensions of scientific knowledge, and how curatorial practice can open up different ways of thinking about issues ranging from AI and biodiversity to environmental governance and more-than-human relations.
