Economic complexity analyst and sustainability expert focused on innovation, low-carbon transition and data-driven policy solutions.

Carla Sciarra is an Economic Analyst at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), where she leverages her expertise in economic complexity and data analytics to evaluate innovation and sustainability performance across countries. Prior to joining the JRC, she held the position of Assistant Professor at the Politecnico di Torino, where she also completed her PhD in Environmental Engineering.

Her research mainly focuses on the analysis of the productive and technological capabilities of territories that drive innovation. She is also interested in the complex relationships between environmental and economic systems, and financial mechanisms. As a dedicated advocate for science dissemination and communication, Carla aims to make complex concepts accessible to a broader audience. In 2020, she co-designed the award-winning project "Water to Food", a pioneering science communication initiative that explores the significant impact of agrifood systems on global water resources through a range of engaging formats, including videos, books, talks, and informative charts.
