Six new additional indicators have been added to the EU Biodiversity Strategy dashboard, one of the two official monitoring tools of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
The indicators are:
Increase in the number of remediated sites
Change in the concentration of nitrate in groundwater
Change in the concentration of nitrate in rivers
Change in the concentration of phosphate in rivers
Change in the concentration of total phosphorus in lakes
Proportion of fish stocks sustainably exploited.
The first indicator tracks progress against target 10 which aims to achieve significant progress in the remediation of contaminated soil sites.
The next four indicators track progress against target 13 regarding the objective of reducing the losses from nutrients by 50%.
Finally, the proportion of fish stock sustainably exploited is a proxy to track progress against target 15 on the reduction of negative impacts on sensitive species through fishing activities.
Now, the dashboard shows the progress achieved towards 8 targets out of 16, with a total of 16 indicators.
The EC’s Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity will keep coordinating the identification of relevant indicators and consulting the Monitoring and Assessment sub-group of the EU Biodiversity Platform - the governance body of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 - to complete the EU Biodiversity Strategy dashboard and progressively improving the monitoring of the EU's progress in meeting its biodiversity policy targets.
