Dealing with constructing and synthesising indicators is not only a technical problem to be solved by statisticians or information scientists, but also a conceptual exercise. This presentation aims at sketching out the main methodological steps aimed at building indicators and clarifying the different issues to face in synthesizing indicators by identifying the issues which still need to be disentangled through specific research exercises and applications.
