About DARS

The Data Analysis and Robust Statistics team is a dedicated group of data analysts, statisticians, and researchers committed to advancing the EU's decision-making capabilities through superior data analysis.

One of the pillars of the modernisation of the Commission is its digital transformation, which entails the Commission becoming a data-driven organisation unlocking the power the data at its disposal to its full potential for delivering new and meaningful policy insights and informed decision-making.

Although data and data analysis tools are widely used in the Commission, in cases with large data volumes, or complex or sensitive data, it is paramount to use the correct tools and state-of-the-art techniques, including Artificial Intelligence, to remain efficient. Often this know-how is missing even from the external consultants who support these projects, leading to delays, inefficient solutions or a waste of resources.

Traditional statistics (non-robust) and econometrics often rely on preset models that can be very sensitive to even small errors or unusual data points. This sensitivity can sometimes lead to misleading or incorrect conclusions. Unfortunately, this problem is frequently ignored, creating risks when making decisions based on data.

The Data Analysis and Robust Statistics team is a dedicated group of data analysts, statisticians, and researchers committed to advancing the EU's decision-making capabilities through superior data analysis. We pride ourselves on our collaborative ethos, joining forces with partners in other Commission services and also in the academic world.

Our team leverage their experience and innovative spirit to deliver impactful analysis, ensuring that EU policies are grounded in authenticity and integrity.

Additionally, we actively engage with the community through workshops, seminars, and training sessions, fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement.
