Explore the data: Old age dependency ratio by region

Old Age Dependency Ratio (OADR) comparative to the national mean, reported by country, region, and local administrative unit (2021 census data).

  • Visualisation | Last updated: 13 Oct 2025

In this dashboard you can explore the age structure (OADR) of regions (NUTS3) and local administrative units (LAU) in each country. You can explore LAU-level statistics by selecting a country and region.

The Old age dependency ratio (OADR) quantifies population ageing by comparing seniors aged 65 and above, to the working-age population aged from 15 to 64 years.

The dashboard presents the following statistics:

  • OADR by region (country, NUTS3, LAU)
  • The difference between the regional/local OADR and the national mean
  • Population size (total population in the selected geography)

If the difference from country mean value is negative, it means the selected region had a younger population in terms of OADR than the national average in 2021, if it is positive, it means the region had an older population than the national average.

Please note that data may not be available for all units.
