The Learning Lab on Investing in Quality Education and Training promotes the use of education policy evaluation practices in the EU. It helps improve evidence and identify ways to invest in education policies. These policies in turn will lead to better learning outcomes and equity.
The Learning Lab Café is part of our community-building activities of the European Commission’s Learning Lab on Investing in Quality Education and Training.
The Learning Lab community comprises policymakers in education ministries and other stakeholders across Europe. The overall interest of our community members lies in counterfactual impact evaluation of education policies.
The Learning Lab Café aims to discuss education policy evaluation research results and recent relevant policy developments informally and interactively. Our Cafés are 30-minute online broadcast interviews with renowned experts in the field of education.
The interviews are designed to delve into the research areas of our guests while discussing policy insights from their research. After each interview, the audience is able to intervene with their questions for our guest.

Prof. David Card
5 May 2026
The Learning Lab, in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Impact Evaluation (CRIE), hosted its second Learning Lab Café, an insightful online event exploring the intersection of education, labour markets, and policy innovation. The session featured a fascinating 30-minute interview with Prof. David Card, the distinguished Nobel Prize-winning labour economist, followed by a dynamic live Q&A where attendees had the rare opportunity to engage directly with him.
Discussions centred on critical themes, including how education shapes labour market success, strategies for improving employment prospects for disadvantaged groups, and the potential of AI in addressing these challenges. The event fostered lively exchanges and fresh perspectives, all while maintaining the informal, interactive spirit of a café discussion.
