Basic substances or mixtures of substances in an untreated state except for extraction and primary processing. In the broadest sense, these are: metal ores, non-metallic minerals, fossil fuels and biomass.

Primary or secondary material that is used to produce a product. In the context of the bioeconomy, usually raw material is used as a synonym to feedstock ( Nova Institut, 2014)
