JRC Explorer Lab: Learning to harness data for daily work

The JRC team on composite indicators and scoreboards will guide the participants to navigate and familiarise with the Composite Indicators and Scoreboards Explorer Tool. The session will focus on the new European Commission priority: Sustaining our quality of life – food security, water and nature and is open for EU staff

internal staff only

There are many instruments measuring the EU’s most pressing issues, such as:

not to mention other indices and scoreboards developed by international organisations, universities and NGOs.

In fact, there is no shortage of measures of progress, but all this information rests dispersed across different publications and websites, making it difficult to locate, which is partly contributing to the proliferation and duplication of indicator frameworks.

COIN Explorer

This is why scientists at the Joint Research Centre have created an interactive tool to explore data from nearly 200 indices and scoreboards.

By combining these measures into one single platform, the Composite Indicators and Scoreboards Explorer provides a sense of the big picture and allows anyone without a technical background to begin their journey into the world of data in a visual and interactive way.

Using practical examples and case studies, this 1-hour training explains how to use the Composite Indicators and Scoreboards Explorer as a tool for exploring data-driven narratives. There will be a possibility to contribute to a data story which will be published on the platform and as a policy brief.

Participants will learn how to use the different features and data visuals, from creating country profiles based on specific policy areas of interest to analysing data by policy domains. The examples are tailored to serve users who produce briefs, speeches, and simply want to utilise analytical insights in their daily work.

The session will particularly focus on the new European Commission priority: Sustaining our quality of life – food security, water and nature.
