AI Watch

The AI Watch project monitored AI capacity, policies and uptake across the EU between 2018 and 2022.

Brief me

AI Watch was the precursor to the Scientific AI Hub and started as a European Commission knowledge service to monitor the development, uptake and impact of AI in Europe. It was operational between 2018 and 2022, monitoring:

  • industrial, technological and research capacity on AI in the European Union
  • AI-related policy initiatives in the Member States
  • uptake and technical developments of AI
  • AI impact

Key outcomes of the project include the following reports;

AI Watch. European landscape on the use of Artificial Intelligence by the Public Sector, 2022

AI Watch. National strategies on Artificial Intelligence: A European perspective. 2022 edition, 2022

Estimating investments in General Purpose Technologies: The case of AI Investments in Europe, 2020

In addition, a range of interactive dashboards were created to enable exploration of nation-level data. These are still available below, however please keep in mind that the data  has not been updated since 2020.

AI Watch was developed by the JRC in collaboration with the Directorate‑General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT).

Since the inception of AI Watch, the JRC’s AI research work has broadened in scope, and the Scientific AI Hub is now the point of reference of all the latest JRC research on Artificial Intelligence.
