Presentation and documents of the Food Systems Summit

Under the leadership of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the UN Food Systems Summit took place on Thursday, 23-24 September 2021. The aim was to raise global awareness and land global commitments and actions that transform food systems to resolve not only hunger, but to reduce diet-related disease and heal the planet.

The Food Systems Summit recognized the important role of food system to achieve the 17 interconnected Global Sustainable Development Goals and the urgency to deliver on them. The Food Systems Summit aimed at engaging all actors from across the food systems to develop collaborative actions towards the following objectives:

  1. Ensuring Access to Safe and Nutritious Food for All (enabling all people to be well nourished and healthy)

  2. Shifting to Sustainable Consumption Patterns (promoting and creating demand for healthy and sustainable diets, reducing waste)

  3. Boosting Nature-Positive Production at Sufficient Scales (acting on climate change, reducing emissions and increasing carbon capture, regenerating and protecting critical ecosystems and reducing food loss and energy usage, without undermining health or nutritious diets)

  4. Advancing Equitable Livelihoods and Value Distribution (raising incomes, distributing risk, expanding inclusion, creating jobs)

  5. Building Resilience to Vulnerabilities, Shocks and Stresses (ensuring the continued functionality of healthy and sustainable food systems)

For each of these objectives (“action tracks”), documents have been produced to help spark discussion, ideas and engagement:

Scientific evidence has also been gathered across these objectives by the Scientific Group and its Partners. Summaries and full versions of these reports and briefs are available here. They have also been summarized and compiled in this single publication.

To support Member States in developing national pathways towards sustainable food systems, multi-stakeholder Food Systems Summit Dialogues took place in 148 countries and National Convenors were appointed.

The main outcomes of the summit are summarized in this document.
