The Country Briefs include information on the current agricultural season and the harvest prospects for the main staple food crops and livestock situation. In addition, the Briefs provide estimates and forecasts of cereal production and imports together with food price and policy developments. Other topical information may be included when relevant. The Briefs are updated no less than four times per year.

It combines key metrics from various data sources – such as food security information, weather, population size, conflict, hazards, nutrition information and macro-economic data – to help assess, monitor and predict the magnitude and severity of hunger in near real-time. The resulting analysis is displayed on an interactive map that helps WFP staff, key decision makers and the broader humanitarian community to make more informed and timely decisions relating to food security. The platform covers 94 countries, including countries where WFP has operations as well as most lower and lower-middle income countries (as classified by the World Bank).

Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET)

FEWS NET, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, is a provider of early warning and analysis on acute food insecurity. Created in 1985 by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) after devastating famines in East and West Africa, FEWS NET provides objective, evidence-based analysis to help government decision-makers and relief agencies plan for and respond to humanitarian crises.

Conflict, Insecurity and Displacement

Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED)

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. ACLED records the dates, actors, types of violence, locations, and fatalities of all reported political violence and protest events across Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus, and Southeastern and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Political violence and protest activity includes events that occur within civil wars and periods of instability, public demonstrations, and regime breakdown. ACLED’s aim is to capture the forms, actors, dates, and locations of political violence and protest as it occurs across states. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis free and open to use by the public.

Data on Armed Conflict

CSCW and Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research , Uppsala University, have collaborated in the production of a dataset of armed conflicts, both internal and external, in the period 1946 to the present.
