Training for Policymakers to “Work with Evidence”

Brief me

The JRC-designed “Work with Evidence” training was created to improve policymakers’ competence in evidence-informed policy making. It includes modules about topics such as Systems Thinking, Scientific Literacy, Interaction among policies, Evaluation of Evidence Needs and Evidence Assessment.

The content is based on the “Work with Evidence” cluster in the EU’s competence framework for 'Innovative Policymaking'. It aims to empower participants to navigate the complex challenges of making policy in today’s rapidly changing world  and address the use and challenges related to evidence throughout the policy cycle. In this way, the training complements the already existing training for scientists in a science4policy function.

While acknowledging and managing uncertainty, the participants learn methods to identify the evidence needs, interpret scientific information, network with experts, and collect relevant evidence to inform policy decisions. The course offers theoretical knowledge combined with practical examples and hands on experience on specific policies in the green, and digital sector, such as water pollution, transport systems, and mining of critical raw materials.

The training material will be publicly available in English and in other languages in Q2 of 2024. It will include a guidebook for trainers, and we will offer trainings of trainers as well. A first one is scheduled for November 2023 targeted at trainers of local and regional policymakers.

All further information, incl. training dates, will be published on this page.
