The 2018 EU Bioeconomy Strategy accelerated the deployment of a sustainable European bioeconomy, with also a view to maximise its contribution towards the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the Paris Agreement.
The 2018 Strategy has five objectives:
- Ensure food and nutrition security
- Manage natural resources sustainably
- Reduce dependence on non-renewable, unsustainable resources
- Limit and adapt to climate change
- Strength European competitiveness and create jobs
To reach these objectives, the Action Plan accompanying the strategy includes 14 concrete measures along three main action areas:
- Strengthen and scale up the bio-based sectors, unlock investments and markets
- Deploy local bioeconomies rapidly across the whole of Europe
- Understand the ecological boundaries of the bioeconomy
The Bioeconomy Strategy will be updated in 2025 following the political priorities of the 2024-2029 mandate of the European Commission.
