This fifth progress report provides an update on achievements with respect to the European Union’s (EU) two ambitious commitments on nutrition: to support 40 partner countries to reduce the number of stunted children under the age of five by at least 7 million by 2025; and to allocate EUR 3.5 billion to nutrition between 2014 and 2020.
The number of children averted from stunting by 2025 in the 40 partner countries is now predicted as 4.7 million. In 37 out of 40 countries, the prevalence of stunting has been reducing, most substantially in Asia. The pace of stunting reduction has slightly increased from 1.32% estimated last year to 1.35% this year. However, this needs to be substantially increased to reach the pace necessary (1.82%) to achieve the target of 7 million children averted from stunting by 2025.
