The following new European strategies provides the policy framework for supporting agroecology in third countries:
The Farm to Fork Strategy, at the heart of the European Green Deal , aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly. The Strategy foresees that the EU will focus its international cooperation on food research and innovation, with particular reference to climate change adaptation and mitigation; agroecology; sustainable landscape management and land governance; conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; inclusive and fair value chains; nutrition and healthy diets; prevention of and response to food crises, particularly in fragile contexts. The European Commission has produced a technical note on the role of agroecology in transition towards sustainable food systems in third countries.
The Comprehensive Strategy with Africa calls for EU and Africa to join efforts to reach the Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger and to address the challenges of nutrition and food security by boosting safe and sustainable agri-food systems. A partnership on agriculture would support the development of environment-friendly agricultural practices, promote local production and integrate biodiversity concerns.
Also, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 announces that the EU international cooperation should promote sustainable agricultural practices.
These recently adopted strategies confirm and strengthen the framework for action defined by the New European Consensus on Development , and the in particular the role of sustainable agriculture and sustainable food systems for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In this framework for action the EU and its Member States have agreed to support agroecological practices to protect soils, conserve water resources, halt, prevent and reverse deforestation, and maintain biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.
The role of agroecology to preserve biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, and improve livelihoods is also highlighted in the Africa and Pacific Regional Protocols of the new partnership agreement between the EU and ACP –“Samoa Agreement”-
The agroecological transition will be supported through a number of geographic and thematic programmes for the period 2021-2027.
