The Marshall Islands is a small country in the Pacific composed of many atolls and islets. Contamination of the soil due to salination or as consequence of the US nuclear tests in the 1950s, water scarcity, limited infrastructure and difficulties in commuting from one islet/island to the other, and, among other factors, high population density are putting pressure on the agriculture sector and its capacity to ensure food for all. A high proportion of the food consumed is imported, with more and more consumers shifting from locally grown foods to ultra-processed imported foods rich in fats and sugars.
