Ethiopia has made significant progress in addressing inequalities between men and women in the agricultural sector, with policy innovations and programmatic interventions aiming to level the playing field. In the 2019 and 2021 CAADP Biennial Reviews, Ethiopia achieved perfect scores of 10 for women's participation in agribusiness. The country also performs better on the OECD's 2023 Social Institutions & Gender Index, with lower scores reflecting lower discrimination. However, discriminatory social norms and low implementation capacity hinder the impact of these reforms on women's empowerment. Ethiopia must redouble efforts to meet national and international commitments, including emerging challenges like climate change and conflict.
Read the case study to learn how the country is implementing national development plans and a variety of policies to address women's affairs.
