This dataset stems from the BIOMASS project (https://knowledge4policy.ec.europa.eu/projects-activities/jrc-biomass-mandate_en). Its aim is to build a reliable database to characterize the algae sector and to support informed European policies on Blue Growth and Bioeconomy. In the current database information on the location of the production facilities, group of produced organism (macro/microalgae/spirulina), production method (Fermenters, Photobioreactors, Open ponds, Semi Open ponds, Pilot, Harvesting, land-based and at sea Aquaculture, Integrated multi-trophic or not) and farmed species (macro/microalgae) have been collected in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and UK. The list of European algae producers included in the dataset combines information from desk research, online surveys and existing lists of producers (from EABA and the Federation des Spiruliniers de France).
