Food Systems Profile - Mauritania

The report identifies the following levers for the transition towards sustainable food systems in Mauritania:

To support the nutrition dimension of food systems

  • Strengthen availability, physical and economic access to food through the development of storage and conservation infrastructure in the main agro-ecological zones of the country.

  • The development/strengthening of more efficient marketing systems based on:

    • functioning producer organizations;

    • transparent information;

    • transparent and fair competitive environment supported by public authorities (e.g. market information, road infrastructure);

    • the creation of a network of poles of integrated development for agricultural, forestry and dairy production;

    • the development of distribution channels.

  • The development and implementation of a communication strategy for change in social norms and behaviors.

  • Strengthening and/or setting up grassroots and umbrella producer organizations.

For support to the environmental dimension

  • Increase the performance of food systems in oasis and pastoral areas, vulnerable to climate change and desertification, through an approach based on the green and blue economy:

    • diversification of agricultural production by promoting climate-resilient practices;

    • improving the sustainable management of natural resources, in particular water resources;

    • Development of pastoralism and family livestock farming.

To support the socio-economic development and equity dimension

  • Develop specific job creation programs especially for women and young people. This can be done through the modernization of agriculture, enhanced food processing and the development of the food service sector

  • Design of improved socio-economic policies.

  • Strengthen decentralization and sustainable local development, and reduce territorial disparities in terms of development.

  • Promote and strengthen the participation of women in public, community, political and economic spheres.
