Understanding bioeconomy through biomass data - EU Green Week partner event

This event, presented by the Knowledge Centre for Bioeconomy during EU Green Week, showed how the KCB estimates key biomass flows and dynamics to support the implementation of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy, and how biomass-related data can support policymaking in the field of bioeconomy.

This event took place during EU Green Week on 18 June, 2026. 

Bioeconomy encompasses the production of biomass, its conversion into food, materials, and products, as well as the generation of bioenergy. High quality data for primary, secondary and tertiary biomass is a pre-condition to assess how sustainable and circular the bioeconomy is.

The EU Bioeconomy Strategy, adopted in November 2025, aims to enhance resource-efficient and circular use of biological resources, prioritising extended high-value applications while encouraging industries and consumers to embrace circular practices. The European Commission’s Knowledge Centre for Bioeconomy (KCB) contributes to this through scientific evidence, including modelling and data analysis.

This event illustrated how the KCB estimates key biomass flows and dynamics to support the implementation of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy.  

JRC researchers presented the "Biomass supply and demand in the EU 2012-2022" brief and infographic. They described the overall methodology and results of this work, but also focused on specific sectors: agriculture and forestry. The presentations were followed by an interactive discussion. Participants - more than 90 scientists, policy makers and industrial stakeholders - raised questions on the challenges that biomass estimates pose – in terms of data availability and comparability – but also on the policy impact that such evidence can have.
