In West Africa, small scale fishing activities are important for many inland and coastal communities. They provide them with employment and income, while contributing to the food security of the countries. However, the artisanal fishing sector is poorly taken into account by census operations that are periodically carried out by the national statistical services. To tackle this situation, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU - UEMOA) has launched since 2012 a series major surveys covering the eight countries of this economic zone. To tackle this situation, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU - UEMOA) has launched since 2012 a series major surveys covering the eight countries of this economic zone. This atlas presents indicators describing the fishing equipment and activities, the fish caught, the processing chain of products after capture, as well as the living conditions of fishermen in their habitat sites. The indicators, presented in the form of graphs, maps and tables, are accompanied by analyses written by international specialists and experts from the national administrations that designed and carried out these surveys.
