Encouraging disaster preparedness behaviours

Context

Getting citizens on board when it comes to preparedness for potential disasters is essential in building societal resilience. Improving preparedness and providing people with guidance on how to respond may be a powerful tool to improve the population’s ability to respond in times of crisis. However, research has shown that simply advising people of risks in their region is insufficient to motivate them to prepare.

Goals

We are investigating strategies to encourage concrete preparedness actions for disaster events. Specifically, we will investigate whether visualizing the experience of a disaster situation and its consequences can influence preparedness intentions and actions.

Methods

An experimental survey conducted in 4-6 Member States.

Expected outcomes

This project will contribute to disaster preparedness initiatives and relates to Union Disaster Resilience Goal #2 “Prepare - To increase risk awareness and preparedness of the population”.

Outputs

  • Workshop on the "Behavioural dimension of disaster prevention and preparedness and climate adaptation" at the 8th European Civil Protection Forum on 4 June 2024.
