Context
The EU has established a regulatory framework to guarantee the safety and quality of blood and blood products, which involves research and international collaboration.
Nevertheless, the legislation has some drawbacks that need to be addressed due to scientific and technical advancements and new risks. To tackle these issues, the European Commission proposed a new Regulation in July 2022.
Goals
In this context the CCBI aimed to provide a better understanding of the factors that influence blood donation behaviour, identify obstacles to donation, and formulate effective strategies for increasing donation rates.
Methods
To accomplish this goal, our approach involves conducting a rigorous literature review and carefully designing a field experiment to collect relevant empirical data. In addition to the above, we implement an innovative approach by developing individual country profiles for each of the EU's 27 Member States, which involved collecting comprehensive data on the respective blood donation systems and incentives.
Expected outcomes
Our reports’ insights and recommendations will serve as a valuable reference on the most effective ways to increase blood donation rates and ensure a sustainable supply of these substances for healthcare systems.
