Fisheries and the BBNJ Agreement: A guide

  • Publication | 2026

The guide outlines how the BBNJ Agreement affects and involves the fisheries sector. Although the Agreement does not regulate fisheries directly, its new processes – such as ABMTs, EIAs, capacity building, and marine genetic resource governance – require fisheries data, expertise, and collaboration. The guide explains these intersections and shows how fisheries bodies can engage to ensure coherence with existing mandates while benefiting from new opportunities for cooperation, science, and capacity development. It encourages proactive participation so that fisheries contribute to, and gain from, a more integrated system of ocean governance.
