On 11 July 2022, the European Commission proposed an amendment to the EU Regulation on European environmental economic accounts, which introduces (among others) ecosystem accounts. Ecosystem accounts measure and monitor the contribution of nature to the economy and society in a way that is consistent with economic accounts, which allows more integrated analyses to inform policies.
This initiative is part of the EU implementation of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting-Ecosystem Accounting, the global statistical standard adopted by the United Nations in March 2021, and builds on the outcome of the project on Integrated Natural Capital Accounting (INCA), which is funded and supported by the European Commission.
