Knowledge for policy

Supporting policy with scientific evidence

We mobilise people and resources to create, curate, make sense of and use knowledge to inform policymaking across Europe.

What are 'Science4Policy' competences and why are they crucial for researchers to achieve policy impact?

Achieving policy impact requires a distinct set of ‘Science4Policy’ competences. Discover the new ‘Science4Policy’ Competence Framework and why it is essential knowledge for researchers and research organisations working at the science-policy interface.

When?

27 April - 10:00-11:15 CEST

Why join?

Are you a researcher interested in building competences to ensure policy impact? Would you like to do your self-assessment to evaluate your ‘Science4Policy’ competences?

Then join us for this interactive workshop, where participants will be introduced to the ‘Science4Policy’ Competence Framework, the possible uses of it (e.g. self-assessment, design of training offers) and get the opportunity to interact with it in a playful way.

Background

sci4po_competences

Operating at the interface between science and policy requires a distinct set of new competences, which are rarely covered by scientists' formal university education and doctoral programmes.

These ‘Science4Policy’ competences are essential to increase the impact of scientific knowledge for better policies. Possessing these competences, empowers researchers/research organisations to ensure that the most useful and robust facts are provided and understood in good time to be considered by policymakers throughout the policy cycle.

The Joint Research Centre, the science and knowledge service of the European Commission, has mapped these competences in the ‘Science4Policy’ Competence Framework consisting of 5 competence clusters (A-E, see visual below). Each of these are made up of 3-7 competences (1-27, see visual below), which together constitutes the building blocks of ‘Science4Policy’ as a competence. The framework develops the competences along a 4-level progression model from foundational to expert level.

At the workshop, participants will be introduced to the ‘Science4Policy’ Competence Framework, the possible uses of it (e.g. self-assessment, design of training offers) and get the opportunity to interact with it in a playful way.
