Minderoo’s Global Fishing Index is an ongoing, independent, global study that tracks national-level progress towards ending overfishing in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Index tracks both health of fish stocks and fisheries governance systems in nearly 150 maritime countries and areas.

Description:

Minderoo’s Global Fishing Index is an ongoing, independent, global study that tracks national-level progress towards ending overfishing in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Index tracks both health of fish stocks and fisheries governance systems in nearly 150 maritime countries and areas. The Governance Index characterises each country’s fisheries governance across 83 indicators and six dimensions that have been identified in the scientific literature and by fisheries experts as key for constraining overfishing in national waters. This unique global dataset will increase transparency, data availability and accountability across the fisheries sector and is due to launch in early 2021.

Societal impact:

Minderoo’s Global Fishing Index is designed to complement and expand current efforts to track progress towards SDG Target 14.4 to “regulate harvesting, end overfishing and restore fish stocks”. A recent report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation confirmed this SDG target will not be achieved, creating an urgent need for increased data availability, monitoring of progress and investment in interventions. Notably, the Global Fishing Index Results will be used to identify critical areas for improvement at a national, regional, and global scale, guiding policy makers to focus resources and interventions to achieve the greatest on-the-water impact.
