Description:
The Energy Transition Index (ETI) benchmarks countries on their progress towards transition to a secure, sustainable, inclusive, and reliable future energy system. It provides decision makers insights on countries’ energy system performance, and their readiness for energy transition. In addition to tracking core energy metrics, the ETI considers an inter-disciplinary definition to energy transition – reflective of the interconnectedness of energy transition with other aspects of the economy and society. ETI scores enable tracking progress of countries across different energy transition dimensions over time, benchmarking with peer economies, and identification of improvement areas for accelerated energy transition.
Societal impact:
The World Economic Forum has been benchmarking energy systems across countries for a decade, which has helped to position our insights on energy among energy system stakeholders. The most recent version of the ETI received coverage in more than 35 countries, across different forms of media. The ETI team conducts bilateral briefings with policy makers and private sectors on the implications, and also provides advisory support as necessary towards concrete outcomes. For example: 1) ETI is being used by Government of Malaysia as a tool to enhance energy transition literacy among stakeholders. 2) Government of India is using the ETI as a foundation to develop sub-national energy benchmarking in the country. Furthermore, we leverage the ETI to facilitate a series of country energy dialogues engaging stakeholders at the highest levels - most recently in Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and forthcoming in China and Brazil.
