Description:
The DHL Global Connectedness Index (GCI) measures globalization based on international flows of trade, capital, information, and people. Each country's international flows are measured along two dimensions: depth (intensity relative to domestic activity) and breadth (geographic distribution across origin/destination countries). In its most recent edition, the index covers 171 countries over the period from 2001 to 2021. It also includes an analysis of global trends, using a closely-related methodology, to assess the development of globalization over time and to contribute to present debates about the possibility of deglobalization or a shift to more regionalized or geopolitically-driven patterns of international activity.
Societal impact:
The DHL Global Connectedness Index has been employed across a wide variety of fields as a source of globalization measures and analysis. In academia, the index has been cited in more than 500 research studies in domains such as economics, business, international relations, and sociology. It has also been cited in more than 60 books and has been covered in media reports on globalization around the world. In public policy analysis, the index has been cited in reports by international institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, and OECD, as well as by think tanks and national governments. The index is also used in business analysis and has been incorporated into analytical tools that consulting firms use to advise clients.
