Date of event: Friday, November 22, 2019 - 09:30 to 17:00
Where: Ispra, Italy
Aim:
This workshop brings together the Joint Research Centre (Land Resources Unit) with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve the EU ecosystems index and to ensure that it is developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.
Description:
The Joint Research Centre (Units D1, D2, D3, D5), the European Environmental Agency (EEA) and the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) are currently carrying out an European Union (EU) wide ecosystem assessment. This assessment has to map the state or condition of Europe's ecosystems. It will assess whether ecosystems are in good, medium or poor health, shape or condition. This is done for seven terrestrial ecosystem types (urban, forest, cropland, grassland, wetlands, heathlands and rocky habitats), rivers and lakes and for marine ecosystems. The assessment is based on indicators which have been presented in the 5th Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services report. The Directorate-General for Environment would like to capture the condition of ecosystems in an aggregated indicator or an ecological condition index.
Societal impact:
The index will be used to communicate how healthy European ecosystems are, to compare different reporting areas, and to help prioritise where ecosystems are degraded and need to be restored.
