Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2025

  • Publication | 2026

The Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2025 assesses hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition across the African continent, with a special focus on financing agrifood systems transformation. Drawing on the latest available data, the report shows that Africa remains off track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2, with hunger and food insecurity continuing to rise and progress on key nutrition targets remaining slow. In 2024, more than 300 million people in Africa were undernourished, while nearly 60 percent of the population experienced moderate or severe food insecurity. At the same time, the cost of a healthy diet continues to increase, placing nutritious food beyond the reach of a growing share of the population.Beyond presenting trends and disparities across subregions and population groups, the report analyses the landscape of financing for food security and nutrition in Africa. It examines public and private financing flows, identifies critical gaps, and highlights the role of public policy, blended finance and climate finance in mobilizing resources. The report calls for urgent, scaled-up and better-aligned financing to enable efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems that can end hunger and all forms of malnutrition across Africa.
