We mobilise people and resources to create, curate, make sense of and use knowledge to inform policymaking across Europe.
In EMM, the high-volume stream of multilingual text articles supports research across various domains, including natural disasters, public health, food safety, conflict early warning, border security, crime, science and innovation, among others. This coverage allows us to serve as an essential testbed for scientific research at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and beyond.
Within public health, we offer specific in-domain capabilities, as demonstrated through our work with the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources Initiative (EIOS) project. This project is a fit-for-purpose web-based platform that augments and accelerates national, regional, and global Public Health Intelligence (PHI) activities.
Our research team focuses on numerous topics in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), including topic mining, text classification, named-entity recognition and linking, clustering, detection of framing and persuasion techniques, knowledge graphs, and more. Over the years, the team has developed and tested various approaches to these challenges, integrating high-quality, high-performance results that work on large volumes of data.
