Overview

The JRC is decommissioning nuclear research facilities at four sites - Karlsruhe, Geel, Petten, and Ispra - under the Nuclear Decommissioning & Waste Management Programme. The programme, launched in 1999, will span four decades.

The European Parliament and the Council have promoted a series of initiatives to share the knowledge gained from ongoing nuclear decommissioning programmes (NDAP) across Europe. The goal is to leverage this expertise to support future decommissioning projects. To achieve this, the European Parliament and the Council have entrusted the JRC with leading the Nuclear Decommissioning Knowledge Management Initiative. The JRC manages the knowledge gained in the EU-funded or co-funded decommissioning programmes under this initiative.

NDAP operators

The decommissioning operators from the NDAP, i.e. Ignalina NPP (Lithuania), SERAW (Bulgaria), and JAVYS (Slovakia) implemented and tested a knowledge management methodology in 2021 through Project ENER/D2/2020-273. Using this methodology, the NDAP Operators can develop knowledge products that are currently available to share with other European stakeholders.
In addition, this methodology is being implemented by the JRC Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management Directorate (NDWMD), which has become a knowledge generator (i.e. knowledge product) extracting the knowledge from the ongoing decommissioning activities across the JRC´s four different sites (Geel, Ispra, Karlsruhe and Petten).

Database

A knowledge product is a tangible output of prepared knowledge that enables action of selected users. Since 2021, the NDKM team is supporting the development of knowledge products (almost 50 already available) in the field of nuclear decommissioning, that are available for free access via the link below.
