European Life Cycle Assessment Platform

The EPLCA is the EU’s knowledge base that responds to business and policy needs towards sustainable production and consumption. It supports the methodological development of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the analysis of supply chains and end-of-life waste management.

Food systems

The transition to a fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food system is strongly supported by EU policies. We track the food systems' environmental impacts adopting a systemic perspective and a life cycle thinking approach. Our goal is to support the transition towards a more sustainable food system.

Brief me

  • The EPLCA applies life cycle assessment to analyse the environmental footprint of EU food systems, covering hotspots like climate change, land use, and biodiversity.

  • It develops simulation models, including consumption-, land-footprint, and food-waste models, to capture the full supply-chain impacts of food.

  • Its LCA-based insights support EU policy frameworks such as the Farm to Fork Strategy and the Biodiversity Strategy, helping design more sustainable, efficient, and resilient food systems.

  • By assessing trade-embedded “virtual” land use and environmental spillovers, we help identify the global repercussions of EU food consumption.
