Agricultural biomass production within a sustainable and circular Bioeconomy (2020).

  • Agriculture is the main source of biomass on EU level, providing around 70% (660 Mt) of the total primary biomass. Of these, total crops accounts for almost 50%, collected crop residues is 10% and grazed biomass is 10%.
  • The main demand for biomass in the EU is for food, feed and bedding, accounting for almost 50% of the total known biomass demand.
  • The agricultural sector employs around 8.5 million people in the EU (50% of bioeconomy jobs), generating around €235 billion (30% of total value added from bioeconomy) in the EU.
  • Only 25% of agricultural ecosystems in the EU are in good condition (53% are in moderate condition). Regenerative practices could restore ecological functions while maintaining productivity.
